Barnebys, a Swedish search aggregator for quality art and antiques auctions online, has received an investment from ACTIVE Venture Partners, through its fund AMERIGO INNVIERTE SPAIN VENTURES, and Industrifonden in its first investment round.
The investment of approximately 1 million euros will be used for its international expansion, with the UK as the first target market, and continued business development.
Barnebys.com is a search aggregator for quality art and antiques auctions and auction-related information on the internet. On the website the user will find more than 40 prominent auction houses from Scandinavia, and soon from other countries as well. The service offers search by category, an overview of current auctions, how much bidding time is left for an item, the latest auction bid and the name of the house auctioning the item. Each item leads to the auction house site where you can participate in the bidding process. The latest examples of auction houses that have joined the site are the renowned Sotheby’s and Bukowski’s.
The interest in Barnebys.com search service has grown steadily since its launch in 2011. Traffic has increased to 35.000 unique visitors per week and users are spending increasingly more time on the site.
“Barnebys.com is a search engine in a so far relatively untouched market and has revolutionized it in a very short period of time. People interested in auctions from around the world now have access to the same information in one single place. There is huge potential for the company in international markets which is evident when looking at the well-established Scandinavian market where there is a strong and recognized auction culture”, says Ricard Söderberg, founding partner at ACTIVE Venture Partners.
ACTIVE Venture Partners is a venture capital company based in Barcelona that invests in technology companies, and Barnebys.com is their first investment in Sweden.
“Barnebys.com offers a really good service for all auction enthusiasts, which is also proven in the great interest shown by users. The founders complement each other well and have a good chance to succeed with their internationalisation strategy”, says Hadar Cars from Industrifonden.
Industrifonden is one of the largest and most experienced Swedish investors of small growth companies. The fund manages SEK 3.6 billion (approximately 415 million euros), and has invested in some 90 Swedish companies across various industries.
Ricard Söderberg and Hadar Cars will join Barnebys’ board of directors.
“Industrifonden and ACTIVE Venture Partners are experienced and respected investors who complement each other and contribute with their international network and extensive knowledge. We are very excited to have them at the beginning of our journey. They will be important for us as we take the next step”, says Christopher Ferreira Gomes, CEO of Barnebys.
